what must the built-in display or light source actually do and withstand when the device or machine is used.

Because due to the integration / installation the conditions occurring at the display are NOT identical with the conditions occurring at the device / machine

(e.g. temperature can be significantly higher in the installation, vibration/shock loads are also significantly different depending on installation and position, and much more!)
